In 2020, China's marine renewable energy equipment will achieve stable power generation.

The State Oceanic Administration recently released the “13th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Marine Renewable Energy.” The plan reveals that during the 13th Five-Year Period, the main focus will be on significantly enhancing the technological maturity of marine renewable energy equipment, with a strong emphasis on promoting the engineering application of marine renewable energy. This will enable marine renewable energy equipment to shift from merely “generating electricity” to “generating electricity reliably.”

The marine renewable energy sources referred to in the plan include tidal energy, ocean current energy, wave energy, temperature difference energy, salinity gradient energy, biomass energy, and renewable energy resources on islands. The plan points out that by 2020, China will have achieved stable power generation from core technologies and equipment for marine renewable energy, the industrial chain will be largely established, and the level of marine energy development and utilization will have reached the forefront internationally.

The total installed capacity of marine renewable energy nationwide has exceeded 50,000 kilowatts. More than five island-based independent power systems have been established, integrating marine renewable energy sources such as tidal and wave energy with complementary renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. The production scale of various marine renewable energy devices is being expanded.
