Requirements for conductor cross-sectional area in the standard
Currently, product specifications in major mainstream standards systems for wires and cables all use nominal cross-sectional areas or standard designations to distinguish conductors of different cross sections. Examples include IEC standards, European standards, and national standards (such as GB/T 5023 and GB/T 12706). Among these, the verification of different cross-section standard designations is based on conductor resistance values rather than on direct measurements of conductor cross-sectional areas. In the national standards GB/T 5023-2008, GB/T 5013-2008, and GB/T 12706-2008, it is primarily stipulated that cable conductors must meet the requirements of GB/T 3956. The main verification items include: (1) the maximum diameter of individual wires in flexible conductors and the minimum number of strands in rigid conductors; (2) the resistance of the conductor at 20°C.
The "practical" cross-sectional area of the cable conductor
Actual cross-sectional area: This refers to the actual cross-sectional area of the conductor—the value measured using a micrometer. For wire and cable manufacturers, the question is: Given a nominal cross-sectional area, what should the final designed cross-sectional area of the conductor be in order to meet the standard requirements? Specifically, under the nominal cross-sectional area, the designed cross-sectional area (electrical cross-sectional area) must satisfy the standard requirements—that is, whether the DC resistance meets the specified standards. Today, with improvements in conductor material production processes and advances in science and technology, advanced production techniques for oxygen-free copper have become widely adopted. As a result, the resistivity of copper conductor materials is now sufficiently low that copper wires with diameters smaller than the nominal diameter can easily meet the corresponding standard requirements for DC resistance.
Nominal cross-sectional area of the cable conductor
Nominal cross-sectional area refers to the value specified in the product specifications and is often used in tables. Values derived from the nominal value generally need to be verified through measurement within the prescribed tolerances.
What is the CQC arrangement?
The China Quality Certification Centre (CQC) is a national-level certification body established by the State Administration for Market Regulation and entrusted to the National Certification and Accreditation Administration for management, with the approval of the CQC’s Organizing Committee. CQC is China’s earliest, largest, and most prestigious certification body engaged in quality certification activities. Over the past several decades, it has accumulated extensive experience in global quality certification and achieved remarkable results in all its operations. It ranks first among China’s certification bodies in terms of the number of certified clients and is among the top globally.
