Key points for selecting wires
2019-12-02
1. Length: This is one of the commonly used tricks in cutting corners and skimping on materials. Some people might say, “The wire I bought has a meter marking—look, it says 100 meters!” But you should pay attention: although the wire does have a meter marking, some unscrupulous merchants actually shortchange you by as much as 10 meters in the middle section. For example, after 30 meters, they’ll start labeling it as 40 meters.
2. Wire Gauge: This is one of the most common ways manufacturers cut corners and reduce costs. For example, a 2.5-square-millimeter BV wire—commonly referred to as “single-strand copper”—is a single-strand copper wire. Why is it called 2.5 square millimeters? Because the cross-sectional area of its copper conductor is 2.5 square millimeters. Therefore, for a 2.5-square-millimeter BV wire, the diameter of the copper conductor is 1.78 mm.
3. Copper Quality: Genuine copper has a reddish hue, whereas brass has a yellowish tint. Additionally, pure copper is quite soft, while brass feels harder. As long as you don't end up buying copper-clad aluminum (aluminum with a copper plating on the surface—commonly used in flexible wires), there aren't many instances of counterfeit brass yet.
4. PVC Material: This is a highly specialized topic, so I won’t go into much detail. But one thing is certain: no one makes copper wires to exact standards anymore—instead, they cut corners by using inferior PVC. After all, a ton of good-quality PVC costs at most 8,000 yuan, whereas a ton of copper costs as much as 59,000 yuan. That’s why many manufacturers end up cutting corners on the copper materials themselves.
5. CCC Certification Mark: The power cords must bear the CCC certification mark. Wire and cable products are subject to mandatory national safety certification, and all manufacturers must obtain the “CCC” certification issued by the China National Certification Committee for Electrical Products and display the “CCC” certification mark on their certificates of conformity or product labels. Since power cords are directly related to electrical safety, the quality of these cords can significantly impact our personal safety and property protection. Therefore, it is essential to choose wire and cable products that carry the CCC certification mark.
6. Product Certificate: A qualified certificate for wire products clearly and legibly prints the “CCC” certification mark, trademark, model specifications, rated voltage, length, inspection results, date of manufacture, applicable standards, manufacturer’s name, manufacturer’s address, telephone number, and other relevant information—all of which must match the actual product. Only products bearing such a certificate from a reputable manufacturer are genuine. When making your purchase, be sure to check these details carefully.
